Evolution of Gift Giving: A Look Back at the Origins & Traditions

THe history of gift-giving from The Lullaby Lane

Gift-gifting has been around for centuries, and it’s a tradition that’s deeply woven into our culture. It’s believed that gift-giving has helped encourage social bonding, community involvement, and to create deeper relationships between friends and family. It’s also a way to show your loved ones that you care about them, especially if the gift is thoughtful or specific to the receiver. Let’s take a closer look at the history of gift-giving and how it has helped shape our modern world.

The Origins of GiftGiving

Gift-giving has been around for centuries and is one of the oldest activities done by humans. Some scholars believe formal gift originated all the way back to the cavemen, who would give a unique shaped rock, animal teeth or even bark from a tree to show appreciation, dominance or even affection.  As time went on, gifts were often given as birthday gifts (Ancient Egypt and Greece), to gain favor, show allegiance or loyalty (Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages), and given for all occasions and celebrations (present-day). The idea of gift-giving is to express or show love, affection and to connect with people. A feeling of happiness is often felt when either giving or receiving a gift.

The Different Types of Gifting

There are many different types of gifts that you can give. A few examples are:

  • Gift baskets or boxes: This type of gift-giving is often done to show your loved ones that you care. A basket filled with themed items or items geared towards a specific occasion is always a nice touch.
  • Gift certificates or gift cards: These are often given as a special treat or perhaps to a new acquaintance. Ass it is a less formal gift and it allows the receiver to choose something for themselves.
  • Flowers: Flowers can be a perfect way to show your affection for the receiver. By adding the recipient's favorite type of flower(s) to the bouquet, it gives it a more personal touch.
  • chocolates: It’s no secret that chocolate is one of the most popular items for gifts. Make sure to choose the right type of chocolate for your recipient – some people like bitter chocolate while others like sweet chocolate. And who doesn’t like chocolate-covered fruit?
  • Books: Books are another great idea. To add that personal touch, give a book that can help the recipient learn a new skill or to build on their interests or spark new conversations. The great thing about books is anyone can enjoy them.

What Different Types of Gifts Mean

There are many types of gifts, but the most common ones are jewelry, flowers, and more recently, experiences. Each type of gift has its own unique meaning:

Jewelry: Jewelry is a time and tested gift, typically symbolizing or showing love. But it can also make the recipient feel beautiful, important, and desired. As the saying goes “Diamonds are forever”.

Flowers: Flowers work for any occasion or situation and are generally used to convey some type of emotion. Giving flowers is a great way to show your feelings or sentiments to the receiver.

Experiences: A relatively new idea, this is something the gift giver and receiver can participate in together to have something that is truly unique to them. Experiences are a way to make memories and show you enjoy spending time with that person or support their interest.

Formal gift giving has been around for centuries and whether you’re giving a gift for a special occasion or want to show someone some love, there are many options available. Understanding the meaning behind the gift you are giving and sharing that with the recipient can help them see your intent even if its not obvious from the gift itself.
